What's normal?

Maintaining a great Melbourne McConnell tradition of restaurants with odd - but memorable - titles, Andrew McConnell will open SuperNormal in Flinders Lane (it has a Collins Street address but Lane frontage) early next year.

The site is opposite his friend Anna Schwartz's renowned art gallery. SuperNormal will in effect be a second Golden Fields, the St Kilda restaurant with an Asian accent that has helped reposition Fitzroy Street. McConnell has just returned from Japan where he and designer Dion Hall (Projects of Imagination) researched design cues and contemporary Tokyo style. "Even though the name is different, it will be very similar (to Golden Fields)," says McConnell, The Australian's Hot 50 Restaurants' Hottest Chef winner in 2012. "We've spent the past 12 months building the management team within the group so that we have the resources." Like Golden Fields, SuperNormal will be a McConnell solo project, distinct from his other businesses, The Builders Arms/Moon Under Water, Cutler & Co and Cumulus Inc/Up.

Andrew McConnell says SuperNormal, his new restaurant in the Melbourne CBD, will be similar to Golden Fields, the St Kilda restaurant with an Asian accent.
