Council vows to fight more pokies

The Ballarat council will continue to block applications to create additional poker machines at venues in the city.

The council's decision to oppose the addition of nine pokies to the Red Lion Hotel was overturned by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

Councillor Des Hudson says the City of Ballarat is opposed to the creation of more poker machines in low socioeconomic areas.

He says councillors will continue to block new pokie applications and are prepared for VCAT to test their decisions.

"We will certainly test that policy at every opportunity but we had that robust discussion with the State Government," he said.

"We know that regional cap is there.

"We would ideally want to continue to advocate over time that there should be a reduction."
