Remote bakers roll dough for bake-off

Bakers from around the Northern Territory have been busy in their kitchens, baking up a storm for a competition in Darwin today.

The Charles Darwin University baking show has received entries from Kakadu, Arnhem Land and even as far as Alice Springs.

Those participating are vying for the much coveted award of being named the Territory's best bakery.

John Carter from Nhulunbury entered five categories and had to fly his baked goods in on a plane last night.

Baker Erwin Ladtke at Jabiru drove his entries into Darwin himself for the competition.

"It was a long drive yesterday afternoon to deliver them for this morning's judgement.

"We entered three categories of breads and we also entered three different types of pies," he said.

Mr Ladtke says it can be difficult operating a remote bakery when ingredients run low.

"During the wet season when the roads are blocked, we struggle to get a good supply on time.

"We rely on our local people and through the dry season it's the tourists," he said.

The baking show is being held this afternoon at Charles Darwin University with winners announced at 4pm.
