Pub closure 'end of an era' for Railwaytown

The Railwaytown area of Broken Hill is without a pub for the first time in 125 years with the closure of the South Australian Hotel.

At one time there were four pubs in the western area of Broken Hill - the Gasworks, the Hillside, the Freiberg and the South Australian, which was the first to open in 1888.

It closed on Tuesday after failing to attract any interest from buyers.

Adrian Dalby, a regular at the pub on Wills Street, says it is a pity the pub has closed because it was a nice local corner pub.

"It's the end of an era over in the west," he said.

"It's a sad day but people do get going and they'll find a new watering hole elsewhere."

The owners of the pub, Danny and Narelle Nichols, say the business is the "best it's ever been" but that they needed to move to Mildura to access more services for their autistic children.

Mrs Nichols says the pub's licence is only suspended, and the property is still for sale.
