Another person in hospital in Brisbane salmonella outbreak from Melbourne Cup function

An eighth person has been admitted to hospital following a deadly salmonella outbreak in Brisbane.

The infection has been tracked to Piccalilli Catering, which has blamed a bad batch of eggs used in products provided to Melbourne Cup functions.

One woman has died. Authorities say salmonella did not cause her death but may have contributed to it.

Overall, more than 220 other people have fallen ill.

Australian Medical Association (AMA) president Dr Steve Hambleton warns there is a real risk the outbreak will continue to spread.

"I think we'll see secondary cases," he said.

"The public health unit is looking at this very closely, trying to provide information for individuals.

"We're all reminding people about personal hygiene.

"Certainly there is a potential risk of transmission from person to person when there's a large number of people closely associated."
