Push for local Tasmanian meat brand

A group of private investors is proposing a new abattoir at Nugent on the Tasman Peninsula to brand and market meat from South Eastern Tasmania.

The idea was unveiled at a public meeting of beef and lamb producers at Bream Creek last night.

Around 40 livestock producers gathered at the meeting to discuss the implications of the planned closure of the Bridgewater saleyards next April.

The decision by Roberts Limited to close Bridgewater near Hobart means all stock will need to be transported to their Powranna saleyard complex in Northern Tasmania.

Organiser of the meeting Paul Lovell was heartened by last night's turnout.

He says the closure has added impetus to local plans to process and market meat from South East Tasmania.

Producers at the meeting elected a steering committee to help manage the logistics of moving livestock to saleyards in Northern Tasmania.
