The popular Firefly Cafe has been named one of the country's healthiest.

The buzzing restaurant made it onto the top 50 healthiest cafes and restaurants in Australia in a list published in the December of Women's Health magazine.

Owner Asher Andrews said he and his wife Jess were thrilled with the national recognition.

He said he had no idea the cafe had been judged until they were contacted by the magazine and told then were listed as a finalist.

"We didn't know we had made the list until we saw the article.

"It was a huge surprise and it reinforces that we're on the right track.

"Our ethos is to make the food from scratch, so there are no question marks about what goes into our dishes."

Women's Health editor Felicity Harley said after months of extensive research undertaken by the team, the magazine had developed the impressive list of the healthiest casual eating options in the country.

"Our readers care about what they eat when they go out, and the fact is that having an indulgent, delicious meal and being healthy aren't mutually exclusive - that's why we created this list and developed our bespoke Fork of Approval stamp so consumers know which café or restaurant makes the grade," she said.

"It's been a really inspiring project to work on - seeing the way cafes and restaurants have embraced clean, raw, paleo and vegan dishes in their menus.

"We're looking forward to creating an annual list of the best in class in this category and watch Australian businesses rise to the challenge of being both delicious and healthy."
