One witness said she saw one of the cars plough into the front of the cafe after the crash.

Ellie Stamatelatos, who was standing across from the cafe, said a learner driver was having a lesson when their car was struck by another vehicle.

"The L-plater was just coming down the street," she said.

"He was with an instructor just having a lesson and the older driver came out of a side street without stopping.

"She basically just flew straight across the intersection, hit the car with the L-plater and the instructor, which just spun around and then she went flying into the coffee shop.

"There were a couple of ladies sitting at the coffee shop about a table away from the door and they just ran out of the way just in time."

Ms Stamatelatos said the learner driver made sure everyone was ok.

"He bolted out of the car to check that the ladies in the cafe were ok and not hurt," she said.

"He just kept repeating 'was it my fault? was it my fault?' because he'd only done about 10 hours of driving, he said.

"His instructor, she was taken away with a neck brace."

Paramedics said the women, who were all passengers, suffered minor head and chest injuries.

They assessed eight other people who were in the cafe and on the footpath.

Fire and Rescue New South Wales said the cafe has minor structural damage.
