A top Scottish chef has appeared in court charged with attacking a man with a cricket bat in Perth.

Willie Deans, a former Scottish Chef of the Year and Culinary Olympics winner, is accused of assaulting Gary Cummings near his restaurant, Deans @ Let's Eat.

The 52-year-old is alleged to have "repeatedly" struck Mr Cummings on the head and body with the bat in Carpenter Street on Sunday.

He made no plea or declaration during a hearing at Perth Sheriff Court.

The case was continued for further examination, and Mr Deans, who appeared from custody, was released on conditional bail.

Mr Deans formerly worked at the Turnberry Hotel in Ayrshire, and was head chef at the Buttery in Glasgow.

He won Young Master Chef of the Year and was named Scottish Chef of the Year in 1995, as well as being runner-up in British Chef of the Year in 1996.
