Calls to lower alcohol taxes on pubs and clubs in Victoria

Anti-social behaviour associated with alcohol will decrease if pubs and clubs reduce drink prices, says the Victorian branch Australian Hotels Association.

Fewer people are going to the pub, says the Hotels Association.
Fewer people are going to the pub, says the Hotels Association.

The group is lobbying for taxes on pub drinks to be lowered in the hope of luring people back to their local.

They say 80 per cent of alcohol was drunk on premises and 20 per cent at home roughly 30 years ago, a figure that has reversed today.

Brian Kearney, CEO of the Victorian branch of the Australian Hotels Association, said licensed venues were better equipped to deal with the responsible service of alcohol.

"We've got a raft of regulations that ensure that liquor is sold and consumed responsibly," he said on 3AW Drive.
