Mission cafe a treat for the soul

A NEW Hobart cafe is not only serving hot food and beverages but also delivering warm and fuzzy feelings while doing it.

Permission to Eat, run by the Hobart City Mission, has a pay it forward system that allows customers to assist individuals and families within Tasmania’s community who are struggling to put food on their table.

Permission to Eat's chef Simon Davies outside the cafe.

By buying a voucher when they purchase their own meals, patrons enable those in need to come in for a free feed.

The cafe, in Barrack St, is also a training facility for long-term unemployed and others at risk of long-term unemployment, offering training and skill development and helping them gain work within the hospitality industry.

Chef Simon Davies has previously worked at fine dining restaurants including Home Hill winery, Henry Jones Art Hotel and Cradle Mountain Lodge.

“I’ve been banging out fine dining meals for 22 years, so something with some social context is nice to be involved in,” Mr Davies said.

The official opening is tonight.

All proceeds from the cafe go back into the City Mission’s work.
