Five different Brisbane dining experiences to shake up your week

FANCY a feed that’s a bit out the ordinary?

If your weekly takeaway rotation of pizza and Thai is getting a bit bland, why not head out and hit up some of Brisbane’s best alternative dining experiences.

Whether it’s a new culture, food that makes you squirm or just a better view to chow down to, the river city has a bunch of great options to shake up your dinner dates.

City South News rounded up five of the best for your gastronomic pleasure.

1. African at Moorooka

Known for its rich African culture, Moorooka has more than its fair share of interesting and delicious dining options. If you’re keen to try something from a little-known African cuisine, head to Yeshi Buna where you can stuff your face with Ethiopia’s culinary offerings, and also get an education on the country from the owner Workneh. For a no frills affair head to Umdorman, where they serve delectable Sudanese cuisine in their simple Beaudesert Rd restaurant.

2. Bugs at Public Restaurant

If you’re all about that adventurous life you have to check of Brisbane CBD restaurant, Public. A step up from eating worms in the garden as a kid, their menu is peppered with creepy crawlies given a touch of the gourmet. Options such as “Worms, Kang Kong” and “Salmon, Black Ants, Apple” are not for the faint of heart, but definitely reward the adventurous diner.

3. Hare Krishna at West End and Brisbane city

If you like your vegetarian feast with a side of festive dancing, then Hare Krishna establishments will be right up your alley. Simple, delicious and unassuming food is served, and on certain nights the Hare Krishna community will dance and speak about their beliefs – with joining in basically mandatory. Govinda Hare Krishna restaurants can be found in the city and West End.

4. Bush Tucker at West End

Apart from a snag in bread on a hot day, it doesn’t really get more Australian than Tukka at West End. And if their tag line “Advanced Australian Fare” is anything to go by, they obviously have a way with puns too. Featuring busk tucker ingredients brought to the public in the form of delicious fine dining, Tukka is a unique way to try real Aussie food without resorting to a lamington at the bakery.

5. Food with a view at South Bank

Drink in the view, and a wine, on South Bank’s iconic Wheel of Brisbane. The wheel, which gives eagle eye 360 degree views of Brisbane, offers a package which includes wine, beer and an antipasto plate to indulge in while you take in the river city’s skyline. And if nothing else, it makes for a pretty impressive Instagram shot.
