New Perth stadium gets chef’s tick

One of Australia’s top chefs has backed the new Perth stadium, saying big sporting events will help grow WA’s hospitality sector.

Guillaume Brahimi is in Perth for tonight’s Australian Hotels Association WA Accommodation Awards, where he will cook for 600 guests at the French-themed event. The menu celebrates local produce including tuna, pork and Brahimi’s current favourite cut of meat, brisket.

Despite arriving in Australia from France more than 20 years ago, Brahimi said he had dis-covered WA only recently and it was something he lamented.

He said he wanted to help the local hospitality and tourism industry capitalise on the State’s natural beauty and amazing food experiences but Australian tourists needed a hook in the form of sport or entertainment to convince them to travel.

The popular chef said a sea of Wallabies fans aboard his flight yesterday after the Bledisloe Cup match in Sydney was the perfect example of why domestic tourists travelled.

“We just need to keep bringing events. Events bring people and if you come for a game on Sunday, you might arrive on Wednesday and people think about travelling and seeing things before the match,” he said.

“There are natural tourist attractions in WA but you need more than that...what we need to do now is have great hotels, great accommodation, great food destinations and have attractions and events to bring people over.”
