New rules for a Manly pub after dangerous anti-social behaviour

A Manly pub will have to abide by new license conditions after numerous anti-social incidents at the site, brought it to the attention of lawmakers.

One of the worst offences cited was patrons throwing items from the second-floor balcony onto the Corso pedestrian strip.

Liquor and Gaming NSW said a “build-up of incidents” at the Hotel Steyne has resulted in the venue receiving new license conditions such as a ban on use of the second floor balcony after 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

A new CCTV system will also be installed with more coverage of the premises.

According to Liquor and Gaming NSW director of investigations David Byrne, the anti-social behaviour has prompted the new conditions.

“There were 12 incidents in a 12-month period up to November 2021 where items were thrown from the balcony at the Steyne onto the Corso,” Mr Byrne said.

“There were also a number of other violent incidents and general anti-social behaviour culminating in the need for licence conditions to be imposed.

“These conditions aim to reduce the risk of being seriously injured by thrown glass, ashtrays and polycarbonate tumblers.”

The Iris Capital owned hotel must now implement a revised management plan as well as a new crime scene preservation condition as part of the new licence conditions.

Iris Capital chief executive Sam Arnaout said he supported the new conditions.

“The conditions were done in consultation with the venue – they deal with areas of concern and we’re always open to ways to work better,” he said.

“We’re committed to safety and security – you can go into the venue and count a small army of security guards – the safety of our patrons comes first and last.”

Mr Arnaout is hopeful that licence conditions are open to future review.
