Man in critical condition after Oxford St pub brawl

A 23-year-old man from western Sydney has critical head injuries after becoming involved in a brawl outside an Oxford Street pub in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Evander Tuala is fighting for his life in the intensive care unit of St Vincent’s Hospital.

NSW Police have charged three young men from the eastern beaches with affray and are treating the incident as a possible homicide but are calling for witnesses who were at Taylor Square around 12.30am Saturday to come forward with information.

The men aged 20, 20 and 19 have all been arrested.

Two will appear before Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday and one has been granted conditional bail.

Police estimate 10 to 15 people were involved in the brawl, which broke out outside the pub after Mr Tuala left the venue with another young man after being kicked out by security following a minor incident inside.

Officers are still investigating what triggered the violence.

“We understand there’s two different groups. The young man who is fighting for his life is from the western suburbs of Sydney, Fairfield way... And we understand the other group is from the eastern beaches area. They weren’t known to each other, to our understanding, prior to this incident,” Superintendent Duncan said.

“We do understand that both groups were in a licensed premises, there was a very minor incident and security ejected them, and as a result of that a brawl broke out outside the premises.”

Homicide detectives are involved in a consultancy role, but “obviously we’re treating this as a potential homicide”, Superintendent Duncan said
