Shoppers skip buying kangaroo

It's high in protein and low in fat, but it's just not sexy enough to sell well.

Kangaroo meat is sold as steaks, mince, fillets and even 'kanga bangers', but butchers says the demand for roo meat is low.

Canberra butcher Andy Munoz says he likes eating kangaroo but doesn't bother selling it.

"People just like the normal red meat, chicken and pork," he said.

"It's because it's not a very normal cut of meat and they just can't eat it normally."

He says most people aren't familiar with how to cook kangaroo.

"So you've got to marinate it," he said.

"My best marinade is olive oil, a bit of port and a bit of salt, that's it...two to three hours...and the best way to cook it is on the barbecue or in a frypan for five minutes."
