Produce export push targets Indonesian hotels

South-west Western Australian fine food and wine is being promoted to Indonesia in an attempt to export to the country's hotel industry.

The South West Development Commission has just finished promoting the region as a producer of premium quality produce in a four-day marketing event in Jakarta.

It is hoped that south-west meat, olive oil and truffles will be joined by wine as an export to Indonesia.

Commission CEO Don Punch says the region is looking at breaking into niche Asian markets.

"The hotel industry alone in Indonesia, which does provide wines and beverages, can be a very big market for the south-west and that's why we target the efforts that we make" he said.

"It's not just straight into the broad community market, we're actually looking at particular industry sectors and where our product can be excepted."

He says building strong relationships is vital to exporting south-west produce to Asia.

"We have built wine exports into Indonesia but it's also provided a very strong base now we think to start looking at areas of olive oils, truffles, south-west lamb and beef, going into the niche markets at the higher value end," he said.
