Balmain Exchange Hotel re-opens

After closing more than a year ago, the iconic Balmain Exchange Hotel has re-opened.

This time, it has a new business model, new concept and a new first-time publican operator.

The landmark pub has quite a history. Sitting on the corner of Beattie and Mullens Streets, it was built for the local working-class population back in 1885.

However, it was forced to close in April 2017 with the working class moving out and the gentrification of the area

Ideal Space founder David King, who specialises in converting properties into shared workspaces, took on the Exchange and has now re-opened the 130-year-old pub for business and pleasure. And he’s invited professionals, families, and even four-legged friends to come to the new look pub.

The Exchange is now offering quality beverages. These include aperitifs and uniquely crafted cocktails. And then there are the brews of local taphouses and selections from Australia’s esteemed wine regions.

The menu is classic pub-style choices and share plates. There’s a charcuterie board and cheese selection.  Also on offer are the seven handmade oven roasted pizzas with fresh Italian Mozzarella.  The menu also include ‘donut fries’ with molten Nutella, and a twist on the classic S’more.

King is looking to take it further.

He plans to turn the former function room into a bistro dining area.

It is a little scary, but an exciting challenge,” King told Pubtic.

“Balmain definitely is the pub capital (or once was!), however I am very motivated to get it right for the locals. The locals will keep us in business, so their desires will be met.

“It is a shame to see so many venues close, as they are part of the fabric of Balmain. We will be keeping it simple, but hopefully getting it right to ensure that The Exchange is still here in years to come.”
