Adriano Zumbo to open fifth Sydney patisserie in Waverley

ADRIANO Zumbo will open his fifth Sydney patisserie after buying a bakery from a retiring master baker at Waverley.

Patissier extraordinaire Adriano Zumbo has bought a cake shop in Waverley off a retiring master baker.

The shop-front premises White's Cakes was sold to Zumbo through Mcgrath agent Edward Reid recently for an undisclosed sum believed to be more than the $1.6 million plus price guide.

White's Cakes has been run by a master baker Paul Helmrich for the past 30 years and is an institution to many locals in the area.

"It's really lovely the way it's worked out for everyone,'' said a local cake lover, who preferred not to be named.

"Just like a family recipe it's being handed down from one pastry chef to another.''

Zumbo is well know in the pastry business - earning the nickname 'Patissier of Pain' after giving MasterChef contestants culinary challenges like his macaroon tower and V8 cake.

But while creations such as these have contestants, especially in elimination rounds, quivering in their aprons, they're sure to be sweet with local children.

The Arden St bakery was scheduled for auction on June 23 and sold on the day. It was advertised as a comfortable family home with a mixed use commercial shop front that included four bedrooms with a three-car lockup garage. The property last sold in 1983 for $105,000.

It will be Zumbo's fifth patisserie with the others at Pyrmont, Balmain, Manly and Rozelle.
