Nightclub group wants violence triggers addressed

An organisation representing nightclub owners is calling on governments to address the causes of late-night violence.

The Nightclub Owners Forum has criticised government at all levels for blaming licensed venues as the cause of public violence.

Two groups of youths were involved in a number of assaults at clubs in Bairnsdale on Saturday night.

David Butten from the Nightclub Owners Forum says rejection from licensed venues and a lack of public transport are often triggers for late-night violence.

"There are distinct differences between regional and city behaviours," he said.

"In regional areas there's probably more of a one-dimensional crowd if you like, people might go to a football club first and then on to a nightclub or a hotel and so on, so there can be issues associated with that in regional areas."
