Whitsundays to get a new six-star resort

Plans for a six-star Whitsundays hotel have been given the green light by Whitsunday Regional Council after a year-long battle.

The development by Well Smart Funnel Bay Development is planned for Funnel Bay, a secluded getaway near Airlie Beach, with 140 rooms, outdoor theatre and food and beverage venues including a restaurant on the cards.

The proposal was approved by council despite being over the height limit as it was satisfied “the design would blend in well with the natural backdrop”.

“I think what makes it unique is that it’s just a short drive from the main street of Airlie but it’s away from the hustle and bustle,” said PRD Nationwide Whitsunday chief executive officer Annette Harm. “It will feel like a peaceful retreat.”

Construction on the hotel is expected to begin before the end of the year.
