Popular Southbank restaurant closes its doors for the last time

A popular Southbank restaurant in Melbourne has closed its doors for the final time.

The closure of Miyako Japanese Cuisine and Teppanyaki after 27 years has left fans of the venue heartbroken.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Miyako,” read a social media message from the owners.

“We want to extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and patronage over the past 27 years since we first opened on 11 May 1997.”

“Serving you has been our greatest pleasure and thank you for all the wonderful memories.”

The sushi bar, teppanyaki, and à la carte restaurant thrived in the '90s, attracting renowned Japanese chefs like Yosuke Furukawa (Izakaya Den, Robata).

While it is unclear as to what led to the closure inside the three-level Southgate restaurant and shopping complex, devastated customers were quick to share their memories.

“So sad. Food was always excellent, as was the service,” one social media user wrote.

“We’re sorry to see you go. We were regular customers and enjoyed the food, sake and wonderful service,” another said.
