Can a pod-like capsule inside Space Q Capsule Hotel fix the housing crisis?

A $300 per week, pod-like space in inner Sydney’s Haymarket has been described as a 'dystopian' capsule 'apartment'.

The apartments, within the Space Q Capsule Hotel on George Street, have been designed to address Sydney’s housing crisis and help those who can’t find or afford even a small unit.

The space has been further described as a 'unique accommodation solution' for renters searching for a 'cost-effective long-term living' option.

The capsule is so small adults need to crouch inside.

Capsules are reportedly stacked and in arm's length of adjacent 'rooms'. They come with a single and double-bed option, USB charging ports, a TV and a safe to store small personal items.

Renters would need to use a communal bathroom, kitchen and living spaces, but would have lockers available for storing personal belongings.

The listing agent promotes the capsule as the 'next generation of fresh, affordable, long-term accommodation,' however Sydneysiders are sceptical that a capsule meets 'minimum standards of living.'

“Calling it an apartment is a bit of a stretch,' said one Facebook user.

“These are okay for a night of cheap accommodation ... but it's not very liveable long-term,' another wrote.

One woman who spent a night in a capsule said it was 'definitely not suitable in the long term'.

“The capsule was in a room with 5 other capsules. Also one of the showers in the bathroom didn't work and someone had vomited in the other one,' she said.

According to PropTrack data Sydney is the most expensive city in Australia to rent, while vacancy rates are extremely low.
