NSW Gov inject $750m into Sydney Fish Market redevelopment

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Planning Minister Rob Stokes have announced a $750 million cash injection into the redevelopment of the Sydney Fish Market.

Early works are slated to begin next year with the fish market to be relocated to the head of Blackwattle Bay with an opening date set for 2024.

Major funding has been secured with two development applications, one for the demolition of the existing wharves and site preparation, the other for the construction of the new fish market facility, to be placed on public exhibition shortly.

“Sydney Fish Market is one of Sydney’s major attractions, with 20 per cent of all international tourists to Sydney visiting the market during their stay,” said Sydney Fish Market chief executive Greg Dyer.

The building, designed by Danish architects 3XN, along with BVN and Aspect Studios, includes public promenades, a ferry wharf and more than 30,000sqm of new public open space across the precinct.

The retail floor space will be doubled to more than 12,000sqm to allow for greater patronage and expanded food service.

The building will also have a 6-star green star rating and solar electricity generation.

"More people come to visit the Sydney Fish Market than visit Australia's Great Barrier Reef each year," said Stokes.
