New luxury Cairns hotel planned for 2020 may open in stages

Crystalbrook Collection is looking to open its third luxury hotel in Cairns in stages to avoid flooding the local accommodation market with rooms, according to a report in the Cairns Post.

Flynn will be the third addition to hotel group’s growing portfolio in Cairns when it opens next year. But the Cairns Post says the group will only open a portion of its rooms after construction ends to avoid saturating the market which is going through a soft spell.

International visitation to the Far North has fallen 1.7 per cent, with the international tourism market facing headwinds after Cathay Pacific pulled out of its Cairns-Hong Kong route and China Southern failing to reboot its route after a six-month hiatus.

The 311-room Flynn will join sister properties Riley and newly opened Bailey, bringing the group’s total number of new suites and hotel rooms in Cairns to 839.

Crystalbrook Collection area manager Joel Gordon said the hotel will open its first restaurant, Boardwalk Social, on January 21.
