Byron Bay’s Fig Tree Restaurant gutted by fire

One of Byron Bay’s most iconic venues has been gutted by fire leaving the owners scrambling to find alternative venues for its long list of booked events.

The Fig Tree Restaurant in Byron Bay’s hinterland has been burnt to the ground by a fire that started just after 3am on Saturday.

Matt Crisp from NSW fire and Rescue said the quick thinking of owner Che Devlin who ordered the evacuation of the nearby guest accommodation prevented any casualties.

“We woke today to the worst news for our beautiful venue and family home,” the owners wrote in a post on social media.

“Our venue has been devastated by a fire overnight. We are in complete shock, as we know many of you will be.

“Thank-you to the firefighters of Byron Bay who worked to try to save this special home. It is completely heartbreaking.”

A NSW Police spokesman said the cause of the fire is still not known.
