Flinders University’s Café Alere scoops national award

Flinders University’s Café Alere has been named the best in the nation for dining at the 2019 Restaurant & Catering Awards.

Helmed by head chef Kyle Wood, Café Alere opened in 2016 as part of a $63 million redevelopment to create a student hub at the heart of the Flinders University campus.

Owned by Flinders University and managed by Blanco Horner Hospitality Management, the café went on to win a string of awards including South Australia’s Cafe of the Year for 2018 and 2019 in the SA Restaurant & Catering Awards.

Speaking to The Advertiser, Café Alere manager Sally Bevan said it was “a great achievement to be recognised on a national scale”.

“Recognition is great for staff morale and it’s great for people to see a new list of places to try,” she said.

Bevan said that as a student café they were mindful to keep the menu pricing “very competitive”.

“It’s also just a beautiful place to be in with views out to the beach from the balcony and ceiling to floor windows with lots of natural light,” she told The Advertiser.

Restaurant & Catering Industry Association chief executive Wes Lambert congratulated the national winners.

“These businesses are among the best and most talented our industry has to offer and we encourage Australians to get out and experience just how good these businesses are,” he said.
