New café part of $58m redevelopment of iconic Sydney pool

A revamped café and gelato bar are part of the redevelopment plans for one of Sydney’s most iconic swimming pools.

North Sydney Council has submitted $58 million development plans for the Olympic Pool that also include a children’s interactive water play area along with a sundeck, a grandstand with shade structure, and capacity for 970 people, and expanded 1100sqm gym.

A new 50 metre pool and a four-lane 25 metre indoor pool are also in the plans.

The historic venue had previously warned it would have to shut down if it didn’t address its renovation issues, and was recently deemed so “unsafe” it cancelled the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks event due to safety fears.

Mayor Jilly Gibson said the pool was a “much-loved and well-used local facility” that has international appeal.

“These plans will ensure the Pool continues to meet community needs and remains one of the best outdoor pools in the world,” she said.
