Meriton plans to open new 5-star hotel in Canberra

Plans for a new-build 5-star, hotel in Canberra have been unveiled by developer Meriton.

The 16-storey hotel at 40 Allara Street will be part of the Meriton Suites brand, offering apartments style accommodation.

The hotel will offer around 250 rooms, with the suites spanning from level one to 14, according to the pre-development application.

The one-bedroom suites will make up about 70 per cent of the rooms. One and two-bedroom suites will span the first 11 levels with larger rooms on the upper levels.

Other amenities will include a pool, gym and juice bar on the top level, while the ground level will feature commercial and retail space.

Speaking to the Canberra Times, Meriton boss Harry Triguboff said its expansion into Canberra was a “logical progression” for the company.

“Canberra long has been on our radar because it’s drawing nearly three million visitors a year,” he said.

“Many people are going there on business, often politics related, and visit for multiple nights. They like the home comforts of having things like a lounge, kitchen and laundry.”

Architects Fender Katsalidis have been commissioned to design the project.
