Iconic Surry Hills pub set to reopen in 2020

A Surry Hills pub that has been boarded up for the 10 years is set to reopen in 2020.

The Hopetoun Hotel on the corner of Bourke and Fitzroy streets used to be one of the city's most popular live music venues.

But it was forced to close more than a decade ago, after owner Evangelos Patakas accumulated overwhelming fines and police citations for noise violations in a residential area. The council eventually chained the venue's doors shut in 2009.

The heritage-listed pub was left to decay until this month when owners the Patakas family announced their intention to reopen it as a pub and bar next year.

A specific timeline for the redevelopment of the Hopetoun and its eventual reopening has not yet been confirmed, but when it does reopen it won’t operate as a live music venue.
