‘Gentle giant’ killed in pub altercation

A man has been arrested and charged with manslaughter following the death of a popular local at a hotel in regional Victoria.

Creswick man David Blake, 39, died following an alleged altercation at the Farmers Arms Hotel in Creswick, 15 kilometres north of Ballarat.

Police believe the alleged altercation took place just before 2am on Sunday morning.

Blake was a popular member of the tight knit community with a number of family members living in the small town.

Speaking to The Courier, one resident described Blake as a "happy, jovial guy". Friend Sue-Anne told Nine news he was “a local icon”.

“He was a marshmallow inside, he was always ready for a hug and he would help anybody,” she said.

A 41-year-old Creswick man has been charged with manslaughter and appeared in the Ballarat Magistrates Court on November 25.
