From burgers to anime for new eatery in Adelaide

An anime-inspired restaurant is set to open in the site of former Ben Hurs burger bar at 53 O’Connell Street in Adelaide.

Opening at the end of the week, Yang Chow will serve a fusion of Japanese, Chinese and South Asian cuisine.

But the planned redesign of the space won’t happen until after the new year, according to owner Shawn Wu.

SOKO Design Studio is behind the new concept design with Malicious Delicious graphic designer Ryan Turner to add the anime illustrations on the walls.

Speaking to InDaily, Wu said he decided to move from burgers to contemporary Asian cuisine due to a local market that did not embrace an upmarket burger concept.

“This is Adelaide and it doesn’t matter how good your food is, people will spend eight dollars next door [for a burger],” he said.

“If you sell a $20 burger and [it’s] just a burger, that’s not enough to make people come. You cannot make enough profit.”

The new menu includes satay chicken and beef skewers, vegetarian spring rolls and crispy fried wontons, Peking duck, salt and pepper tofu, and tom yum soup with beansprouts, lemongrass, king prawns and pineapple. There will also be a selection of rice and noodle bowls.

Drinks will include a selection of Japanese beers and spirits.

Wu intends to sell his other business, Chinese eatery Mei Sun, to focus on Yang Chow.
