Bet over Sydney light rail to cost pub 30,000 free beers

A Sydney pub that bet the city's new downtown light rail would not open and run on time gave out an estimated 30,000 free beers.

The owner of The Morrison Bar in Sydney’s CBD has paid a hefty price after losing a bet that the light rail would not open and run on time.

Fraser Short made a public bet that the new George St tram line would not carry fare-paying passengers before Christmas. The wager seemed safe enough after many years of delays and controversy, with Short saying last year “frankly we’ll believe it when we see it”. Unfortunately, the light rail opened the next month.

More than 10,000 people registered for the bet which would see them get a free beer if they won. And this week The Morrison Bar poured around 30,000 free beers at its Tram Party, which also raised funds for the WWF Koala Crisis Appeal.
