Planning greenlight for InterContinental Sydney’s ambitious redevelopment

InterContinental Sydney’s ambitious plans to construct a grand ballroom above the heritage part of its building have been given the go ahead by the Independent Planning Commission.

The $203 million development plans include an expansion of the 509-room hotel, and using the roof and airspace above the adjoining Transport House.

But the planning commission has ruled out any expansion of the hotel that would jeopardise the “exceptional heritage significance” of the former NSW Treasury building which dates back to the 1880s.

The tick of approval is a major coup for the Malaysian owners Mulpha, after the City of Sydney aired concerns over the plans.

Mulpha still needs to seek approval for construction as part of separate development applications before it can start building.
