Council to decide on new Cairns hotel and apartment development this week

Cairns Regional Council is set approve the development of a new hotel and apartment towers in the CBD.

The plans for the five-storey 48 room hotel are being considered by the council this week, after an application was lodged in July last year. The plans also include an eight-storey residential tower and a two-level shopping and commercial centre, with the ground floor to be tenanted to restaurant and cafe-style businesses.

“While the proposed development does not meet all suggested acceptable outcomes relating to setbacks, landscaping, parking and access, it largely achieves the overall outcomes that advance tropical urbanism and appropriate built form outcomes for the city, including through conditions of approval,” a council report stated.

“In particular, these relate to the design of the upper floors to enhance the building’s character and identity, requiring detail on facade treatment/materials and colours, and detailed landscape plan requirements.”
