Geocon’s $70m hotel in Canberra gets greenlight

A new luxury hotel in Canberra has been given the greenlight and is expected to open in 2022.

Geocon’s $70 million proposal for an 11-storey, five-star hotel was approved by the ACT planning authority.

Located at Garema Place, the 212-room Canberra City Luxury Hotel will feature an “Instagramable” rooftop pool and bar, restaurants and cafés on the ground floor, a ballroom and meeting space.

A revamped Gus’s Cafe will anchor the dining precinct, with Geocon saying it will honour the heritage of the site as well as install an artwork or mural telling the story of the cafe and reinstalling a plaque.

The hotel will bring an “unrivalled level of style and glamour to Canberra’s city centre, while still maintaining the character and charm of old Canberra thanks to key inclusions like Gus’s café,” according to Geocon.

“The convenience of its city location, proximity to the airport and light rail line, as well as access to some of Australia’s best restaurants will draw people, energy and vibrancy to the heart of Canberra’s CBD.”

Construction on the hotel is slated to begin at the end of the year.
