Work slows at Darwin Westin
The slated opening of Darwin’s $200 million Westin hotel is in doubt after reports that work on the site is making slow progress.
The 6-star hotel was due to open in 2022, but developer Landbridge will not say if it can meet the proposed deadline, according to a report in the NT News.
In a statement to the NT News, the developers said work on the offsite prototype hotel room with Darwin-based M&J Builders “is proceeding well and is expected to be completed shortly”.
“The Westin Darwin luxury hotel will bolster Darwin’s reputation as an exciting travel destination and attraction for both locals and visitors, with a skywalk offering public access to the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, bar, pool and spa,” they stated.
According to the NT News, there is speculation the project has been slowed down until the local economy picks up.
But a Territory Government spokesman said they were advised “the hotel is on schedule”.
Landbridge was gifted 2.9 hectares of land for the project by the Territory Government who have also committed $17 million to build a skywalk to link the Waterfront to the CBD.
The Territory Government first signed an agreement to develop the hotel in August 2016, with the expectation the hotel would open in 2020.
