Culinary history of Victoria on show

For the entire month of August The State Library of Victoria will showcase a gastronomic feast for the eyes with Gusto! A culinary history of Victoria.

The Library’s collection includes the earliest Australian cookbook published in 1864 to hand-written recipes for curing afflictions from sore throats to skin cancer and snake bites.

Among the 250 items on show are historic Vegemite jars and Victoria Bitter bottles, as well as objects from and interviews with some of Melbourne’s leading food identities such as Jacques Reymond, Rita Erlich, Guy Grossi and Stephanie Alexander.

This exhibition includes Jacques Reymond’s knife bag - a treasured family heirloom - which originally belonged to Reymond’s grandfather.
