Moonee Ponds supermarket to be transformed into 400-pax restaurant and bar

A heritage listed former supermarket in Moonee Ponds will open as a 400-person restaurant and bar in April.

The team behind food truck The Ascot Lot, David Bartl, Jacob Bettio and Lachlan Taylor, have been renovating the rundown space since July last year.

Located next door to the trio’s existing bar and bottle shop Fizz & Hop, the 500smq space is being transformed into Holmes Hall, a venue that will offer trivia nights, pinball machines and street-food snacks alongside local beers and natural wine.

The kitchen will be helmed by chef Angus Adams with a menu focused on globally inspired “Melbourne street food”, such as Thai sticky chicken with lemongrass caramel and a lime-y coleslaw; salt cod croquettes with lemon aioli; patatas bravas with smoky cherry tomato sauce; charcuterie platters; and poached pineapple with coconut ice-cream.

Speaking to Broadsheet, Bartl said the concept is “to make it a social space where food is meant to be shared”.
