Smart thinking saves Railway Hotel

The manager of the historic Railway Hotel in Calliope says a prompt response from firefighters and new electrical cabling helped to save the pub.

A suspected electrical fault caused two signs to catch fire early yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in less than half an hour.

Hotel manager Clyde Tanner says it could have been much worse.

"I spent a lot of money on making sure the place doesn't burn down," he said.

"You come into places like this and you don't know what you're going to find until you get up there and have a look and [I] did some work with the electrician, spent about $30,000 on electrical [work] and it saved the pub."
