Roof collapses and fire rips apart a Yarra Valley restaurant just days after re-opening

The COVID-19 lockdown has taken its toll on many businesses in the hospitality industry. Some will struggle to regain their feet, while those lucky enough to survive will take many months to recover.

Balgownie Estate was one of the lucky ones. The popular Yarra Glen winery opened its doors to the public on 5 June, with the 60-by-40-metre restaurant only recently reopening following the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

It had been back in business for approximately 20 days before a large blaze ripped through the kitchen and restaurant causing extensive damage, with part of the roof collapsing. Staff reports suggest the fire was started by a kitchen fan.

Rae’s Restaurant was empty at the time and no one was injured.

The fire at Balgownie was brought under control at 1pm on 25 June by the 14 CFA crew who attended. Two CFA vehicles remained at the scene until 4pm. Authorities do not believe the fire is suspicious.

The staff were able to evacuate without harm and all 20 staff members were accounted for.

The good work conducted by the local CFA meant no damage was done to the venue’s accommodation facilities, with Balgownie Estate able to receive overnight guests shortly after the fire. The Estate  also reported limited damage to the events space.

Such has been the nature of Australia’s rural communities during the devastating bushfire season and COVID-19 lockdown, the generosity shown by the surrounding vineyards has been heartwarming. Several restaurants and vineyards in the valley have offered to feed overnight guests at Balgownie Estate until the restaurant has been rebuilt.

A spokeswoman for the estate said, "Everyone's banding together; that’s the spirit of the Yarra Valley."
