New Rydges hotel to service $30 billion naval base in South Australia

The State Commission Assessment Panel has approved CK Property Group’s proposal for  a new 180 room hotel designed to service South Australia’s high tech defence industry.

The banks of the Adelaide River will provide the perfect waterfront location for the property.

The new Rydges on the Wharf Port Adelaide will be the closest hotel to bases for the $30 billion Hunter Class Navy Frigate and the $50 billion attack class submarines. Both bases are expected to last more than 30 years.

The venue, which will cost close to $60 million, will also service Technology Park and Edinburgh Defence precinct which isn’t far from the location. In addition to this, it will service the other 7,000 businesses within the 7,000 hectare precinct surrounding Port Adelaide.

It was earlier announced by EVENT (Event Hospitality & Entertainment Limited) that they had entered into a conditional management agreement with CK Property Group in relation the new Rydges Hotel on the Port Adelaide Wharf.

This waterfront area is the last of the underdeveloped heritage ports in all of Australia’s capital cities.

The six-storey hotel will offer 180 rooms, restaurants, bars and conference and meeting facilities. There is expected to be a French-inspired restaurant, named ‘Black Diamond’ to honour the historic name of the region.

Director of EVENT Hotels and Resorts Hospitality and Entertainment Norman Arundel said the fast growing defence sector would mean this project will be in high demand.

"We look forward to Rydges becoming an integral part of the local community," he said.

“EVENT also has enormous enthusiasm for South Australia’s vibrant Tourism and Travel sector.

"We recently opened the highly successful Atura Adelaide Airport and have also announced the existing QT brand will be coming to Adelaide.

"Rydges Port Adelaide will be our third Rydges Hotel in South Australia.”

Joint Managing Director of CK Property Group Walt Coulston said acclaimed architect Brown Falconer had been assigned the task of create an iconic waterfront hotel design "which would help revitalise Port Adelaide", adding that of paramount importance was respecting the area's history, as well as accommodating the NAVAL Group, whose new head offices will be located in close proximity to the new hotel.

"Our focus will not only be on providing much needed high-quality accommodation to the nearby Defence Sector, but also to create new amenity in the form of alfresco dining and various wine bars for everyone to enjoy," he said.

"Event is the perfect partner for us, and we look forward to working closely with them to the benefit of all involved.”

This announcement is considered a significant boost for Port Adelaide’s ongoing renewal according to South Australian Tourism Commission Chief Executive Rodney Harrex.

“We are very proud of our relationship with the CK Property Group and Event Hospitality & Entertainment and their commitment to invest in South Australia,” he said.

“Port Adelaide is seeing tremendous growth in business and leisure investment.

"We look forward to working with the team at Rydges Port Adelaide to support this new accommodation development.”
