No fresh air breaks for returned travellers in quarantine

Queensland hotel quarantine has just become a little more unbearable.

Returning Australians were informed this week that those staying in rooms without balconies or open windows, will not be allowed to go outside for their daily 45 minutes of fresh air.

The news was broken to the guests on Monday after new directives from Queensland Health.

Some people in quarantine have warned of the mental health challenges being locked away for up to 14 days.

One traveller wrote, “There are toddlers and solo people in here, and the implications on mental health are worrying.”

The change in policy was confirmed by Queensland Police after being advised by the health department of “significant infection risks” related to the fresh air breaks.

“The chief health officer advised that Queensland Health does not support the provision of fresh air breaks during quarantine as they pose a risk to the public health and safety of all persons involved,” a spokesman said.

The spokesman mentioned there were some exceptional circumstances where these fresh air breaks would be permitted.

“In these instances, police officers will engage with Queensland Health to determine whether a fresh air break is appropriate and the safest way for it to be conducted,” the spokesman said.

“A number of hotel quarantine venues have been operating in this manner for some time and the guidance seeks to ensure consistency throughout the statewide operation.”
