RIP: Brisbane loses iconic venues to COVID in 2020

Brisbane’s hospitality industry has taken a beating this year with many venues not seeing out the end of 2020.
The list of venues affected seems endless.
Topping this list are venues such as Alanna Sapwell’s waterfront restaurant ARC Dining and Wine Bar – a venue that ranked no. 1 in the delicious.100 for QLD last year.
Another shock closure is that of Southbank’s riverfront Stokehouse Q.
In the suburb of Albion, the Lodger Kitchen & Bar run by Blair Gillespie and Daniel Collins closed their doors just two years after opening. This was the pair’s first hospitality venture with fine dining experience.
Not all of the 2020 closures were caused by the pandemic lockdown.
In January, Pony Dining in Brisbane’s Eagle Street Pier precinct had announced it was closing down, stating that patrons that used to visit eateries in the CBD were now choosing to eat at Howard Smith Wharves, thus leading to a drop in revenue.
Some iconic venues have also changed hands during the year.
The Italian Il Centro on Brisbane’s waterfront was taken over by restaurateur Tom Sanceau and his Happy Fat Group.
