Qantas giveaway looks to kickstart travel … and the economy

Qantas has launched a nationwide campaign to encourage more people to get vaccinated.

Australians 18 and over who get fully vaccinated between now and the end of the year can enter the “mega prize draw” and win free flights, accommodation and fuel.

There will be ten winners, with each winner collecting a year's worth of flights to 60 destinations (including overseas destinations), free accommodation at 345 different hotels and free fuel.

While there will only be ten winners for the mega draw, Qantas will also offer prizes to all vaccinated Australians.

Anyone aged over 18 will be able to select a gift from the airline.

According to Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce, increased vaccination numbers would help decrease the amount of lockdowns and allow people to get back to work.

"The impact of the pandemic on the travel industry and our own Qantas Group team members means we have a clear vested interest in the success of the vaccine rollout," he said.

"For us, getting the vaccine rate up to 70 and 80 per cent means thousands of people can go back to work."

Qantas has also announced that by November, all its cabin crew, pilots and airport workers would need to be fully vaccinated with alternative mechanisms put in place for those with medical exemptions.

A staff survey shows around 4% of Qantas workers were not willing to get vaccinated.

"For people unwilling to take the vaccine, we think aviation is not the industry for them.

"We are flying from hotspots to regional communities, to communities that are vulnerable, and I think it's an expectation from those communities we put the protections in place."
