Vaccine passport app could be trialled in NSW as early as October

A new vaccine passport app may be trialled in NSW.

The app is being designed to confirm a person’s vaccination status via QR code once they check in to a venue.

Gladys Berejiklian has told reporters that authorities would get advice from the Health Department regarding best locations to trial the pilot app.

On Tuesday afternoon, NSW Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello, told 2GB host Jim Wilson that a two-week trial will most probably take place before the vaccine passport technology is rolled out.

Dominello said the trial that is set to open in early October could see some hospitality venues in certain areas open to test the system.

“We can then start doing a two-week pilot... for the first two weeks of October.

“Around that time, we should be hitting the 70 per cent (vaccination) mark.”

No decisions have been finalised, but there is speculation that one Sydney local government (LGA) and one regional LGA could be chosen for the trial.

However, Deputy Premier John Barilaro said that it’s not certain if a trail will even take place.

“These decisions haven’t been finalised or made,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

The areas that will be considered for the trial are those with high vaccination rates and low Covid cases.

Mr Dominello said they haven’t decided where these trials will be happening but confirmed the passport would be available inside the Service NSW app.

“It’s basically what the industry is calling for,” he said.
