Beloved Sydney restaurant closes – another victim of COVID lockdowns

COVID-19 has put another restaurant out of business, this time a beloved Sydney yum cha institution.

The popular Marigold Cantonese restaurant will open for the final time in December.

The owners put out a statement saying, “With a heavy heart, we announce the closing of Marigold Restaurant,” the announcement reads.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and travel. Sadly, it has also hit Marigold’s function business and weekday trading. As there are plans to extend the CityMark Building, it is time to say goodbye.”

The Marigold sits on the top two levels of the CityMark building on George Street in Chinatown and has only been re-open since October 11 when the Greater Sydney lockdown ended.

Last service will be a Yum Cha service on Sunday, 5 December.

Marigold was known for dim sum dishes including its prawn dumplings, barbecued pork buns and roast duck, along with mango pancakes.

The Hong Kong-style Chinese restaurant first opened in 1982 at 299 Sussex Street and operated alongside sister restaurant, Regal on the corner of Sussex and Liverpool streets.

Regal served Sydneysiders from 1986 for 20 years.

Making the closure harder was the loyalty of staff, some of whom had been with the company for more than 20 years.

“We have been very privileged to have served Sydneysiders and visitors from interstate and overseas, many of whom have become our friends,” Marigold wrote on its website.

“The children and grandchildren of our customers have grown up with us and held their milestone celebrations in the restaurant. We have also served corporations and community associations, witnessing their achievements.

“We express our heartfelt gratitude to our customers for your support, especially messages of encouragement received during the pandemic.”
