Marriott International’s The Luxury Collection opens in Hobart

The newest property in The Luxury Collection by Marriott International has opened in Hobart, as part of the city’s refurbished Parliament Square historical precinct.

The 152-room hotel is architecturally and aesthetically divided into three sections spanning 180 years: the 1840s Georgian building, the 1937 art deco building and the new Pavilion building.

In 2017 the $100-million-plus project was announced as a partnership of Marriott International and property owner Trawalla Group, the family office of the Schwartz family, and developed by Citta Property Group.

It is the first of The Luxury Collection in Australia.

Via video from Marriott International headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, Philip Weghmann, global brand leader for The Luxury Collection said, “The Tasman is a magnificent addition to this brand.

“Hopefully we will be able to build on the success of The Tasman and add more Luxury Collection hotels in Australia and New Zealand in the coming months and years.”

Native Tasmanian materials have been used in the build by architect for Parliament Square FJMT and fellow Sydney design counterpart Joseph Pang Design Consultants.

Materials include Native sassafras inlaid in art deco room ceilings and a timber bath in the plush St David’s Park Suite, which is intricately crafted in blackwood.

St David’s Park Suite is the jewel in the Georgian building’s crown.

“The wonderful sandstone and masonry buildings that now house The Tasman hotel and frame around the new public space of Parliament Square are like a timeline for the post-colonial history of the site,” FJMT principal David Haseler said.

“Our challenge was to reveal and enhance, not cover and diminish.”
