Elderly man bashed at Perth seafood restaurant

An elderly man is recovering in a Perth hospital after he was allegedly attacked by a stranger whilst sitting in the outdoor area of a seafood restaurant.

WA police said the 76-year-old man suffered serious facial injuries when he was attacked at 5:10pm on Wednesday outside the restaurant on Marine Terrace in Mandurah, 85km south of Perth.

The man was allegedly punched in the face, which caused him to fall back into a flower bed at which point he was allegedly punched again while on the ground.

The 76-year-old was taken to Peel Health Campus.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Kris McDonald said a 28-year-old man has since been arrested and charged with aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm.

It is still unclear as to what sparked the alleged incident, but according to Sgt McDonald, it appeared to be an allegedly unprovoked attack.

“The elderly gentlemen was simply attending our local restaurant area to meet up with family,” he said.

“Families should feel they can come to the local area here in Mandurah and spend time with their family and go home safely, that’s just unbelievable.”

Police are encouraging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
