Broome baristas offered near six figure salaries

A takeaway restaurant in Broome is offering baristas a $92,000-a-year pay-packet to make coffees.

The Good Cartel recently advertised six vacant positions in their venue across their kitchen and front-of-house including a barista position for $92,030.

The barista package involves working 47 hours over five days a week, including the weekend. It also includes superannuation.

The position offers $83,001-a-year if the successful candidate didn’t want to work on weekends.

For a 55-hour week, kitchen staff are being offered an annual pay of $112,464 a year for five days of work including weekends.

Packages for Drive-thru attendants are being offered at almost $80,000 a year.

Owner of Good Cartel, Jack Kain said paying staff higher than industry rates has become a necessity in recent times.

“It’s a better than usual strategy now with the labour shortage, which has now fallen well and truly off the cliff,” he said.

“When you combine this with the rental shortage and all of the various COVID restrictions incoming it’s going to be challenging.”

But other restaurants say it has been impossible to attract staff.

Short St. Café was due to have its grand opening this week and was going to offer exclusive take-away coffee and baked goods.

“We do feel that in town there is a sense of shortage,” he said.

“Hopefully when the season kicks in everything will be OK.”

In January, the Federal Government announced that Tourism Australia would receive $3 million for marketing campaigns targeting international students and backpackers.
